    Development Director (Volunteer)

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

    Division: Development & Advancement

Location: Remote via Google Meet and/or New York City

    Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, literacy development, academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and community-centered storytelling, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people and families can thrive.

MAP’s work sits at the intersection of education, housing stability, advocacy, creativity, and community innovation. Our impact depends on sustainable, ethical fundraising that honors the dignity of the communities we serve and the trust of those who support our mission.

    The Opportunity

The Development Director plays a critical leadership role in strengthening MAP’s long-term sustainability. This role exists to ensure that fundraising is strategic, relational, values-aligned, and transparent—never reactive, extractive, or transactional.

This is not a volume-driven fundraising role. It is a thoughtful, senior leadership position focused on building systems, partnerships, and strategies that allow MAP to grow responsibly while staying deeply grounded in its mission.

    What You’ll Do

    • Lead and steward MAP’s overall development and fundraising strategy.
    • Oversee institutional fundraising, grant strategy, donor engagement, and stewardship efforts.
    • Partner closely with Executive Leadership, Finance, and Program teams to align funding with organizational priorities and impact goals.
    • Support, mentor, and guide development volunteers, grant writers, and fundraising partners.
    • Build and nurture relationships with foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors.
    • Guide the creation of compelling, ethical donor communications, impact materials, and stewardship practices.
    • Establish clear development timelines, goals, tracking systems, and reporting processes.
    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit fundraising standards and ethical best practices.
    • Participate in leadership planning, cross-functional strategy, and organizational decision-making.
    • Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours.
    • Take responsibility for continuous performance improvement by refining strategies, systems, and outcomes over time.

    How MAP Leads and Supports

MAP approaches leadership with care, clarity, and respect. In this role, you can expect:

    • Clearly defined scope, authority, and expectations
    • A collaborative, mission-driven leadership culture
    • Respect for time, capacity, and boundaries
    • Transparency around goals, constraints, and decision-making
    • Thoughtful feedback and trust-based collaboration
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • Recognition of development work as strategic leadership and relationship stewardship, not transactional labor

    Who We’re Looking For

    • Demonstrated experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, or advancement leadership.
    • Strong understanding of grantmaking, donor stewardship, and long-term fundraising strategy.
    • Ability to think systemically while also guiding practical execution.
    • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and organizational skills.
    • Comfort collaborating across programs, finance, governance, and executive leadership.
    • Deep commitment to equity, transparency, and mission-aligned fundraising.

    Helpful but Not Required

    • Experience with education-, housing-, or youth-serving organizations
    • Familiarity with donor CRMs or fundraising databases
    • Background in institutional giving or major gifts
    • Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole a plus)

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6–12 month commitment strongly preferred
    • Remote collaboration via Google Meet, with optional NYC-based meetings
    • MAP prioritizes sustainability, clarity, and care over urgency or burnout

    What You’ll Gain

    • Senior leadership experience shaping the financial sustainability of a growing nonprofit
    • Meaningful partnership with executive leadership and mission-driven teams
    • Portfolio-worthy accomplishments in ethical fundraising and organizational growth
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • The opportunity to directly support programs that change outcomes for youth and families
