Peer Support Specialist - Professional Volunteer

Job Overview:

Are you a compassionate leader who isn't afraid to go where the need is greatest? The SpreadYourHeart Organization is seeking Peer Support Specialists to join our Street Sweep outreach teams. This is a front-line role dedicated to building direct, human-to-human connections with our neighbors experiencing homelessness. You are the first hand reached out to a TENT HOMIES (homeless individual). Your mission is to engage with individuals in the field, identify their immediate needs, and serve as the vital link to our comprehensive Case Management services.

Responsibilities:

• Direct Field Engagement: Conduct regular Street Sweeps to identify and connect with individuals and families in unsheltered environments.
• Intake & Enrollment: Assist individuals with initial sign-ups for SYH services using our mobile intake tools, ensuring data is captured with empathy and accuracy.
• Needs Assessment: Perform Quick-Check assessments to determine immediate requirements (hygiene, food, medical, clothing) and report back to the logistics team.
• Warm Referrals: Act as the primary bridge to our Case Managers, ensuring that high-need individuals are successfully transitioned into extensive, comprehensive support programs.
• Dignity-First Advocacy: Represent the SYH mission by providing peer-led support that prioritizes humanization, respect, and individuality.
• Safety & Coordination: Work in tandem with the Street Sweep team to ensure all field operations are conducted safely and in alignment with SYH ethics.

Qualifications:

• A deep understanding of the challenges faced by displaced individuals, often through personal experience or extensive prior field work.
• The ability to provide deep emotional support while maintaining the ethical boundaries required for high-impact social work.
• Exceptional street-level communication skills—the ability to build trust quickly in high-stress environments.
• Comfortable working outdoors in various environments and managing the emotional weight of crisis-intervention.
• Past experience in security, military, or emergency response (preferred but not required).
