    Volunteer with the Children of Incarcerated Parents - Uganda

    Touch African Lives Foundation (TAL Foundation) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for vulnerable children especially children with incarcerated parents, youth, and communities across Uganda. Our core programs focus on education support, health awareness, community empowerment, and social welfare initiatives. TAL Foundation works in close collaboration with local communities to deliver sustainable and impactful programs that address critical social needs.

    Volunteers at TAL Foundation will actively support our "Life of a Prisoner's Child program" working under the guidance of our staff. Their responsibilities include:

    Assisting in educational programs for children, including tutoring and learning activities.

    Supporting community outreach initiatives, such as health awareness campaigns and social programs.

    Helping with administrative tasks like data entry, event organization, and program documentation.

    Mentorship and Psychosocial Support which is an important role in developing empathy, social skills, and providing a stable role model, which helps children build emotional resilience.

    Child Protection & Advocacy volunteers are involved in identifying child welfare cases, raising awareness, and ensuring safety in their communities.

    Recreation and Event Management: Organizing sports, creative arts, and workshops that promote teamwork, self-management, and engagement.

    Mentorship for Children of Incarcerated Parents.

    Objective: To offer stable, positive adult influence to children facing emotional, social, or financial hardship due to a parent's imprisonment under our program called "Life of a Prisoner's Child - Uganda".

    Key Volunteer Roles:

    Academic Tutor: Assisting with homework, improving literacy, and encouraging school attendance.

    Mentor/Befriender: Engaging in recreational activities, sharing skills, and building a trusted, supportive friendship.

    Support Facilitator: Helping children process complex emotions like anger, shame, or sadness related to their parent's incarceration.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Provide consistent, reliable companionship to build stability.

    Foster a safe space for open communication without judgment.

    Support children before and after visits to prisons.

    Requirements: Volunteers should be patient, understanding listeners, willing to work with children from diverse backgrounds. Training on the impact of imprisonment on families is usually provided.

    Activities & Shifts

    1. Mentorship & Emotional Support: Acting as a trusted, consistent adult to help children process emotions, reducing feelings of guilt, stigma, and isolation.
    2. Educational Support: Assisting with homework, tutoring, and encouraging school engagement to ensure academic stability.
    3. Recreational Activities: Organizing, leading, or facilitating youth clubs, outings, or arts and crafts to create safe social environments.
    4. Providing Normalcy: Engaging in simple, fun activities that allow children to "just be kids," preventing them from being defined by their parent's incarceration.
    5. Caregiver Respite: Offering support to the remaining caregivers or family members to relieve the burden of care and financial pressure.
    6. Development Projects: Supporting local staff in areas like sanitation, health education, and counseling.
    7. Reunification Support: Supporting relationships between children and their incarcerated parents.

    Touch African Lives Foundation is located in Ndejje division, Makindye Ssabagabo constituency, Wakiso district, Uganda, with easy access to transportation and local amenities. Our office and program centers are safe, secure, and equipped with basic facilities to host volunteers comfortably.
