Nebraska Wildlife Rehab Wildlife Care Volunteer (Bird, Mammal, or Herptile)

These volunteers are trained to care for wildlife at our Wildlife Center.

We are currently only looking for volunteers that are willing to make a weekly commitment and go through our training process which includes: orientation, class training, and one-on-one training sessions.

Bird, Herptile, and Mammal Nursery Volunteers are asked to come in for at minimum one 3-4 hour shift per week.

    • Normal vacations, if you are sick, or if you need to take time off for finals/etc., are all acceptable reasons to not be able to come in every week.
    • Our busiest time of year is April through September (Baby Season), were we would really like to see volunteers consistently coming in on a weekly basis, especially if being taught hoe to syringe/bottle feed babies.
      • The more you come in, the more you will learn. Volunteers who are unable to come in consistently may be barred from working in certain nurseries, and/or will be only tasked with basic tasks.
    • Herptile volunteers are asked to work 1 pre-scheduled shift per week, year-round. Availability for Herptile opportunities vary.

All new volunteers are required to go through an in-person on-site Orientation before they qualify for the specific role trainings (i.e. Mammal Nursery Training, Herptile Room Training, Cleaning Specialist Training).

    • Certain volunteer roles may have one or multiple training prerequisites.
      • For example, if a new volunteer wanted to attend a Nursery Training Class they will need to attend an Orientation (which includes a Cleaning & Diet Prep Training) + have a minimum of 10 hours of Cleaning experience + 10 hours of Diet Prep experience, before being able to attend a Nursery Training Class.

Volunteer Orientations are held once per month year-round.

Bird, Herptile, and Mammal Nursery Training Classes are only held November through March.

More information about NWR's volunteer opportunities can be found on our website:
