    Descripción

    Description:

    We are seeking an ESL Instructor to lead English language classes for residents who have expressed strong interest in improving their English skills. This role involves teaching practical, everyday English to primarily Chinese residents to help them better interact with their community, ask for assistance, and apply for services.

    Classes are expected to begin on April 1, 2026, and are typically held at 2:00 PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays. Sessions may take place weekly, bi‑weekly, or monthly, depending on volunteer availability and resident needs. Visitor parking is available on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

    Knowledge of Chinese is helpful but not mandatory.

    Reports to:

    Volunteer Coordinator and the site’s Service Coordinator

    Goal of Position:

    To support residents in developing functional English language skills that increase independence, confidence, and access to community resources.

    Specific Tasks:

    1. Prepare engaging ESL lesson plans prior to each class session.
    2. Teach practical English skills for common situations such as greetings, shopping, medical visits, and emergencies.
    3. Monitor attendance and ensure all participating residents sign the sign‑in sheet.
    4. Use a variety of teaching methods (worksheets, visual and auditory aids, group activities) to address different learning styles.
    5. Encourage student participation and solicit feedback on topics residents would like to learn.
    6. Answer student questions and provide clear explanations and support.

    Qualifications:

    Physical/Age Requirements:

    • Ability to stand and move around the classroom during each class session.

    Skills/Education/Experience:

    • Fluent in English with a clear and audible speaking voice.
    • Friendly, patient, and open‑minded.
    • Interest in teaching English to adult learners and working with seniors.
    • ESL training or interest in receiving ESL training is preferred.
    • Previous teaching experience is preferred.
    • Ability to speak Chinese is helpful but not required.
