    What Is Hospice?

When people hear the word hospice, they often think of sadness, pain, and loss. While those feelings can certainly be present, hospice is also a time filled with love, reflection, and deep human connection.

Hospice care honors life’s final transition with dignity and comfort. Much like birth marks our arrival, hospice supports our peaceful departure. It’s about helping patients and families live fully and meaningfully, right up to the very end.

Our hospice team—nurses, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers—walk alongside patients and their families, providing care for the body, mind, and spirit. Together, we aim to make this season one of grace, warmth, and even unexpected joy.

    What Can Volunteers Do?

Hospice volunteers bring the comfort of friendship and presence to patients throughout Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, and El Dorado Counties. Every visit is unique, where sometimes it’s sharing a conversation, reading aloud, playing music, going for a walk, or simply sitting quietly together.

    You might:

    • Listen to stories and offer companionship
    • Read, play games, or work on puzzles
    • Play music
    • Go through family photos together
    • Write life stories or journal memories
    • Give family caregivers a short break

We’ll match you with patients that feel like the best fit, and you can typically expect to visit once a week for about an hour. Every small act of kindness makes a big impact because your presence truly matters.

Benefits of Being a Hospice Volunteer

Becoming a hospice volunteer is one of the most meaningful ways to support your community. It’s an opportunity to bring comfort, connection, and joy to others, and to be profoundly moved in return.

    As a volunteer, you’ll enjoy:

    • Thorough training and continued support: You’ll be well-prepared and never alone; our team is here to guide and encourage you every step of the way.
    • Connection and fulfillment: Many volunteers say their hospice experience gives them a renewed sense of purpose and perspective on life.
    • New skills and insight: Gain valuable understanding about communication, compassion, grief, and the healing power of simply being present.

No medical background is needed, just a kind heart, an open mind, and the desire to make a difference.
