    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, literacy development, creative expression, and housing initiatives, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

MAP’s training division focuses on developing the capacity of mentors, educators, and volunteers who work directly with young people. The Training Specialist will play a vital role in designing, implementing, and evaluating professional development programs that strengthen mentor effectiveness, build trauma-informed awareness, and enhance learning outcomes across all MAP programs.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Training Specialist to lead and support the design and delivery of training sessions for mentors, staff, and program leaders. The ideal candidate will combine instructional design expertise with a passion for education, social-emotional learning, and equity. This is an excellent opportunity to help shape the skill development of a growing nonprofit team and make a lasting impact on the lives of young people.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Design and implement engaging, evidence-based training sessions for mentors, volunteers, and staff
    • Develop materials, toolkits, and e-learning resources focused on literacy, mentoring, trauma-informed care, and social-emotional learning
    • Assess training needs through feedback, observation, and program evaluation
    • Collaborate with program leads to integrate training into MAP’s yearlong curriculum and mentorship model
    • Track attendance, evaluate outcomes, and document participant progress
    • Provide individual or group coaching to strengthen mentor performance
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in youth development and educational training
    • Check and respond to emails daily, ensuring all responses are completed within 48 hours
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by identifying gaps in training delivery and implementing innovative solutions

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Resources, Psychology, Social Work, Communication, or related field (Master’s preferred)
    • Experience designing and delivering training, workshops, or educational programs
    • Strong understanding of mentoring practices, SEL (Social-Emotional Learning), and trauma-informed approaches
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong facilitation and presentation abilities
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Canva, or other tools for virtual learning design
    • Collaborative and adaptable, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and learning styles
    • Commitment to MAP’s mission of equity, empowerment, and community transformation

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote with opportunities for in-person facilitation in New York City

    What You Will Gain

    • Experience developing and leading training programs in a mission-driven nonprofit environment
    • Collaboration with educators, mentors, and youth development professionals
    • Opportunities for professional growth in instructional design, facilitation, and organizational development
    • Letters of recommendation and professional references upon completion
    • The opportunity to shape how learning and mentorship transform young lives across New York City
