What are docents?
Docents are volunteer tour guides at the Anthony L. and Hideko S. Burgess Interactive Learning Center (ILC). Through leading visitor experiences, docents will have a unique opportunity to educate students and the community about culture, medicine, science, geography, and leadership.
What is the Anthony L. and Hideko S. Burgess Interactive Learning Center (ILC)?
The ILC is Operation Smile's newest program located at our global headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Through guided tours of our immersive exhibit, visitors will be able to journey alongside our friends who are affected by cleft conditions as they seek the safe surgery and comprehensive care they need and deserve. With empathy and compassion at the heart of the exhibit, ILC guests will better understand the challenges that patients and their families overcome on their paths toward brighter futures.
Who can become a docent?
Our volunteers at Operation Smile are such an integral part of our team, we welcome everyone interested to apply! Ideal candidates are individuals passionate about humanitarian work, empathy, and lifelong learning with enthusiasm for community engagement and hospitality. Former involvement with Operation Smile or prior teaching experience is helpful, but not required. While docents lead tour groups of all ages, a majority will be student field trips. Docent candidates must be available weekdays and some mornings.
