Start a Brown Bag Project Chapter in Your City

The Brown Bag Project (BBP) is a student-led food insecurity initiative founded in Austin, Texas in 2020. What began as a small group of high school students packing and distributing meals has grown into a movement that has served thousands of individuals experiencing food insecurity. Now, we’re looking for passionate students and community leaders to bring BBP to new cities.

Starting a BBP chapter means leading meaningful, community-centered action to address food insecurity where you live. Chapters organize food drives, distribution events, and partnerships with local schools, shelters, and food banks—creating sustainable impact beyond one-time service projects.

BBP chapters are locally run but nationally supported. Our Core Team provides a comprehensive Chapter Toolkit, onboarding, branding guidance, and ongoing support so you can lead with confidence. While BBP is not a registered nonprofit, we operate under Hack Club’s fiscal sponsorship, allowing chapters to fundraise responsibly while remaining non-political and mission-aligned.

    Who can start a chapter?

    • A committed Chapter Lead
    • One advisor (teacher, counselor, or trusted adult)
    • At least 5 volunteers
    • Willingness to run at least one food drive and one distribution event per semester

    Why start a chapter?

You’ll gain real leadership experience—organizing volunteers, managing logistics, building partnerships, and tracking impact—while making a tangible difference in your community. BBP chapters empower students to lead with empathy, responsibility, and purpose.

If you’re ready to take action against food insecurity and build something lasting in your community, we’d love to support you.
