    Descripción

Adopt an Inmate is seeking a volunteer who speaks Japanese to help mentor an incarcerated student who is eager to continue learning the language.

Ray has been studying Japanese independently for some time using books and whatever materials he can access. He has learned the basics and likely a bit beyond, but he has reached the point where it’s difficult to progress without guidance from someone fluent in the language.

We are hoping to find someone who speaks conversational or fluent Japanese (ideally a native speaker) who would be willing to help him continue developing his vocabulary, grammar, and conversational understanding.

Because of prison communication restrictions, tutoring would take place through the prison’s secure text messaging system and occasional phone calls.

This is not a formal teaching role—just someone willing to encourage learning, answer questions, and share their knowledge of the language.

This opportunity is part of the work of Adopt an Inmate, a nonprofit organization that connects volunteers with incarcerated individuals to support education, connection, and personal growth.

    Ideal volunteer:

    • Speaks Japanese (native or fluent)
    • Enjoys language learning and mentoring
    • Patient and encouraging
    • Comfortable communicating through prison messaging systems

    Time commitment:

    Approximately 1–2 hours per week.
