    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

Location: Remote and/or New York City

    Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, literacy development, housing initiatives, and creative expression, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

MAP’s housing and community development work focuses on expanding access to affordable and supportive housing through partnerships, development, and fundraising. The Grant Manager / Fundraiser Manager will play a pivotal role in advancing this mission by securing resources, cultivating funder relationships, and ensuring financial sustainability for current and future projects.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Grant Manager / Fundraiser Manager to lead MAP’s grant development and fundraising initiatives. This role involves researching, writing, and managing grants while developing relationships with funders and donors. The ideal candidate combines strong writing and communication skills with a passion for housing, equity, and social impact.

This position is best suited for someone experienced in nonprofit development or grant writing who wants to help build a growing organization dedicated to community transformation.

    Key Responsibilities

    Grant Management

    • Research, identify, and track potential funding opportunities (federal, state, city, private foundations)
    • Write, prepare, and submit competitive grant applications, proposals, and RFP responses
    • Coordinate required documentation with internal teams (finance, development, housing, property management) for grant submissions
    • Develop and maintain a grants calendar to ensure timely submissions and compliance reporting
    • Monitor grant agreements and ensure programmatic and financial compliance with funder requirements
    • Prepare interim and final grant reports, including performance outcomes and budget reconciliations

    Fundraising & Development

    • Support annual fundraising campaigns, donor appeals, and special events
    • Build and maintain relationships with institutional funders, corporate sponsors, and individual donors
    • Collaborate with executive leadership and communications teams to create donor materials, including impact reports and newsletters
    • Track donor engagement in CRM/database systems and analyze giving patterns to inform fundraising strategies

    Cross-Team Collaboration

    • Partner with real estate development staff to align grant proposals with project timelines, budgets, and community impact goals
    • Coordinate with finance staff to ensure budgets align with funder requirements
    • Support compliance across projects funded by multiple sources (e.g., LIHTC, HPD, HUD, foundations)
    • Check and respond to emails daily, ensuring all responses are completed within 48 hours
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by identifying process gaps and implementing solutions for greater funding efficiency

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Business, Communications, or related field (Master’s preferred)
    • At least 2–3 years of professional experience in grant writing, fundraising, or resource development for nonprofits (housing/community development experience preferred)
    • Demonstrated success securing government and/or foundation grants
    • Strong writing, editing, and persuasive communication skills
    • Familiarity with nonprofit fundraising strategies, including campaigns, events, and donor cultivation
    • Experience working with budgets, compliance, and reporting
    • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects simultaneously
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with fundraising CRM/databases (Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, or similar) a plus
    • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and a commitment to affordable housing, community development, and equity-focused missions

    Commitment

    • Volunteer leadership role requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote-first, with opportunities for in-person collaboration in New York City

    What You Will Gain

    • Hands-on experience shaping the fundraising and grant strategy of a mission-driven nonprofit
    • Opportunities to build relationships with institutional funders and community partners
    • Collaboration with a dynamic and passionate team committed to equity and housing justice
    • Professional growth through mentorship, leadership experience, and references
    • The chance to advance affordable housing and community development for families across New York City
