About Mentor A Promise
Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, education, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and community-based programming, MAP works to ensure that young people have stability, opportunity, and voice.
In addition to direct services, MAP engages in responsible, compliant advocacy to elevate issues affecting children and families experiencing housing instability.
Purpose of the Role
The Advocacy Coordinator supports MAP’s advocacy and policy-related efforts by helping organize campaigns, coordinate messaging, and engage community stakeholders. This role bridges on-the-ground program realities with public awareness—ensuring that advocacy work remains ethical, nonpartisan, and aligned with 501(c)(3) requirements.
The Advocacy Coordinator helps translate lived experience into responsible civic engagement and education.
Key Responsibilities
- Support planning and coordination of MAP’s advocacy initiatives and campaigns
- Assist with community education, awareness efforts, and issue briefings
- Coordinate advocacy-related communications and outreach materials
- Track relevant policy developments affecting housing, education, and youth
- Support coalition-building with community partners and advocacy groups
- Ensure advocacy activities remain compliant with 501(c)(3) rules and internal guidelines
- Collaborate with Policy, Communications, and Program teams
- Support documentation, reporting, and internal tracking of advocacy efforts
- Participate in meetings, planning sessions, and feedback cycles
- Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours
Qualifications
- Experience or strong interest in advocacy, public policy, community organizing, or civic engagement
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to organize information, timelines, and outreach efforts
- Sensitivity to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and youth-centered work
- Understanding of or willingness to learn nonprofit advocacy compliance
- Collaborative, thoughtful, and mission-driven approach
Bonus (Not Required)
- Background in housing policy, education policy, or youth advocacy
- Experience with nonprofit policy teams or coalitions
- Familiarity with NYC or NYS policy landscapes
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred)
Commitment
- Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week
- Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
- Remote collaboration with optional NYC-based participation
