Board Trustee, The Waterfront Project
Opportunity type: Volunteer (Board service)
Location: Hudson County, New Jersey [Meetings are virtual]
Commitment: Four to six Board meetings per year, plus committee participation, and fundraising events. Two-year renewable term.
Housing is a Human Right!
The Waterfront Project is the only organization in New Jersey that combines free civil legal representation with HUD-certified housing counseling. Last year, we serve more than 3,000 people, helping them fight eviction, avoid foreclosure, buy a first home, and know their rights as tenants. We believe housing is a human right.
Do you believe in housing justice for all? Our Board of Trustees sets the policy and direction of the organization, oversees its finances and risk, and hires and supports the Executive Director who leads the organization. We're looking for new Trustees who will bring their skills, their networks, and their commitment to housing stability.
What you'll do
- Help shape WFP's mission, vision, and strategic plan
- Help WFP secure the resources it needs
- Oversee budgets, the annual audit, and organizational risk
- Support and evaluate the Executive Director
- Monitor program results
- Serve on the Governance, Development and Marketing, or Finance Committee
- Act as an advocate and ambassador, and introduce WFP to people who can advance its fundraising, programs, and policy work
What we ask
- Attend all regular Board meetings each year, plus special meetings
- Give or raise at least $10,000 annually
- Attend and support WFP events
- Come prepared, having read the materials in advance
- Disclose conflicts of interest and keep WFP's internal matters confidential
- Bring respect for the range of experiences and perspectives on our Board and staff
- Trustees are volunteers and serve without compensation
