Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) Dog Handler Volunteer

    About This Opportunity

Idaho Youth Ranch's Residential Center for Healing & Resilience in Caldwell is Idaho's first and only accredited long-term psychiatric residential facility for youth ages 11-17. The young people here have often experienced significant trauma. Their days are built around a structured, clinically designed treatment plan, and every support they receive is carefully coordinated by Idaho Youth Ranch's licensed professional team.

Prescribed Pets AAT is a proud partner in that work. We place trained Animal-Assisted Therapy dog teams at the Residential Center, where they function as an active part of each youth's treatment plan, not as a drop-in visit, but as a purposeful therapeutic tool guided by the facility's clinical staff.

Right now, demand for these sessions significantly exceeds the number of available dog-handler teams. We are actively recruiting volunteers to help close that gap.

    What This Role Actually Is

This is not a casual pet-visit program. Prescribed Pets operates at the intersection of animal-human connection and licensed clinical care. As a volunteer Guide, you and your dog will work alongside Idaho Youth Ranch's Therapeutic Leads, implementing activities that are planned collaboratively and tied to specific goals in each youth's treatment plan.

That means your dog will be an active participant in structured activities, not just present for petting. And it means you'll need to be observant, communicative, and adaptive. you'll be reading your dog's body language in real time and adjusting to the session environment as needs shift.

What We're Looking For in the Dog

Not every good dog is a good therapy dog. The role requires a specific temperament.

Your dog should genuinely enjoy engaging with a diverse range of people for extended periods, not just a quick greeting and a pat. They should remain cheerful and composed in unpredictable environments, including unfamiliar sounds, smells, and emotional intensity. They need to be adaptable when encountering new people and situations, and they need to truly enjoy working through activities with someone other than their owner giving the cues.

General health and wellness, strong basic obedience, a reliable recall, and a strong working relationship with you are all essential. Specialized AAT training is a significant asset.

What We're Looking For in the Handler

The Guide is half of the team. We're looking for volunteers who bring gentleness, empathy, and genuine calm into a clinical setting. You'll need strong communication skills to collaborate with Idaho Youth Ranch's professional staff, and exceptional observational awareness to monitor your dog's wellbeing and adapt activities in the moment.

This role takes time, dedication, and a willingness to be proactive, not just a big heart for people and dogs.

    Before You Apply, Ask Yourself

Does my dog genuinely enjoy engaging with people, even for long periods, even when I'm nearby? Am I willing to invest in understanding my dog's body language deeply enough to catch stress signals early? Do I have the creativity and flexibility to adapt activities to fit different therapeutic goals and my dog's strengths on a given day?

If your answers are yes, we want to hear from you.

    To Express Interest

Reach out to Prescribed Pets to begin the conversation. We'll walk you through the evaluation process, discuss whether your team is a fit, and coordinate with Idaho Youth Ranch's clinical staff to find a placement that works for everyone.
