The We Honor Veterans program at Allelon Hospice honors the men and women who have served in the military and are now at their end-of life journey.
Twenty five percent, or 1 in every 4 deaths in America, is a veteran. Veteran volunteers offer support by conducting pinning ceremonies or by serving as a veteran to veteran volunteer visiting hospice patients to offer companionship, socialization and comaraderie.
Volunteers are also needed to knit or crochet red, white and blue lap blankets for veterans or supply hand-made crafts for the veterans presentation boxes given at pinning ceremonies.
The time commitment is flexible; individuals can serve as needed (when called to conduct a pinning ceremony) or can serve one to two hours a week visiting to provide socialization and companionship. We work on your schedule and your availability. In addition, veteran volunteers are needed for administrative support in the development of the program to meet the unique needs of veterans. We Honor Veterans is a collaborative effort among hospice organizations throughout the country, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Veterans Administration. Our goal is to honor, serve and most importantly say thank you to those who have served our nation. We hope you will join us.
