Become a Shelter Volunteer

Are you interested in helping empower survivors and their families? Shelter Volunteers work indirectly with victims/survivors and their families in Center for Hope & Safety's emergency shelter by supporting staff in shelter operations and by assisting at the Mosaic Activity Center (MAC).

Role

Support CHS's shelter for survivors by organizing materials, preparing rooms for residents, shopping for food and supplies, and assisting at the Mosaic Activity Center (MAC) with children’s activities, story time, library programs, and general upkeep. Every way a volunteer helps out at our shelter has a direct impact on a resident’s experience.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years or older
• Complete a CHS Non-Advocate Orientation Session
• Commit to supporting CHS’s Mission Statement, philosophy, and policies
• Maintain confidentiality
• Accepting of others
• Practice empathy
• Active listening skills
• Able to set and keep healthy boundaries
• Pass a criminal background check

Orientation Session

Orientation is available in-person both during business hours and after hours once a month. Volunteers will learn about the dynamics of sexual violence and other skills necessary to become a shelter volunteer.

Time Commitment

Any time given as a volunteer to CHS is valuable. CHS requires that each volunteer complete at least one shift each month for a minimum of six months.
