    Descripción

As a HELP Swim Volunteer Swim Instructor, you will play a vital role in delivering life-saving learn-to-swim and drowning prevention lessons to children between the ages of 3 and 16. Your mission will be to provide classes that are not only safe and effective, but also full of fun, respect, and encouragement. You will work hand-in-hand with the HELP Swim Environmental Educator, together running our comprehensive drowning prevention and water stewardship program.

This position is only available during the Peruvian summer months, when lessons take place for about 15–20 hours per week. Living in Huanchaco, a vibrant surf town on Peru’s northern coast, will give you the chance to experience life by the ocean while making a tangible difference in children’s lives.

This is a hands-on role, perfect for those passionate about working with children, teaching swimming, and promoting environmental awareness around water safety. You will gain first-hand experience in the world of grassroots NGOs, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and connect with both the local community and an international team of volunteers.

    Responsibilities

    • Deliver swimming and drowning prevention lessons following the SwimTayka curriculum.
    • Assess children’s abilities and organize them into groups according to age and level (maintaining a safe ratio of instructors to swimmers).
    • Support with lesson planning, class schedules, and logistics.
    • Keep records of attendance, emergency contacts, and parental consents.
    • Take responsibility for teaching aids and equipment.
    • Communicate daily with the Program Coordinator and your fellow volunteers.
    • Participate actively in weekly volunteer meetings.
    • Promote teamwork and respect, ensuring safety and fun at all times.
    • Wear your SwimTayka t-shirt or swim cap during lessons and represent the program proudly.

    Requirements

    • Age 18+ on arrival.
    • Background check from your home country.
    • First Aid and/or CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before arrival).
    • Relevant certification or proven experience as a youth swim instructor.
    • Commitment of 2–3 months. The program usually starts in early January (we recommend arriving a week earlier to meet the team and prepare before lessons begin).

    Skills & Competencies

    • Confidence in teaching swimming and water safety.
    • Leadership and organizational skills.
    • Enthusiastic, approachable, and friendly personality.
    • Flexible, responsible, and proactive attitude.

What you can expect from us

    • Personal pick-up on arrival and walking tour of Huanchaco.
    • Support in finding accommodation.
    • Comprehensive induction to the organization.
    • Certified training in First Aid and Child Safeguarding.
    • Two days of holiday per month.
    • 24/7 emergency support.
    • Organized volunteer activities (such as BBQs, game nights, and lunches).
    • Certificate of completion detailing your role, projects, and dates of volunteering.

🌊 A typical day in the role:

You will spend your mornings or afternoons by the ocean or at the pool, working with local children to help them gain confidence in the water. Some days, you will prepare lesson plans or coordinate logistics with your team. Other days, you’ll meet with fellow volunteers and coordinators to review progress, share ideas, and keep improving the program. Outside of volunteering hours, you’ll have time to enjoy Huanchaco’s famous waves, connect with locals, and immerse yourself in Peruvian culture.
