About Tenda Wema CBO
Tenda Wema Community-Based Organization is a grassroots non-profit working to uplift
marginalized communities in Kakamega County. Our mission is to empower the community to
create lasting solutions to poverty. We support grassroot solutions that uplift individuals and
unlock opportunities for all. We operate to break cycles of poverty and vulnerability by providing
access to opportunity, support and advocacy for those who need it most.
Volunteer Opportunity: Proposal Writers (Remote)
We are seeking passionate and skilled volunteer proposal writers to help us scale our impact by
securing grants, sponsorships and donor partnerships. As a volunteer proposal writer, you will
play a critical role in shaping the future of our organization and the communities we serve.
Your skills will directly support:
- Youth empowerment initiatives
- Women empowerment programs
- Support for needy and vulnerable children
- Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change
Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Identify and research funding opportunities aligned with the organization’s mission and donor priorities.
- Write compelling and donor-compliant proposals, concept notes and letters of inquiry to secure funding.
- Develop or support accurate proposal budgets in collaboration with teams.
- Coordinate with staff and partners to gather necessary information, data and project details.
- Edit and proofread proposals to ensure clarity, consistency and alignment with donor guidelines.
- Manage proposal submission processes and ensure timely delivery via email or online portals.
- Track submitted proposals and follow up with donors on application statuses and feedback.
- Maintain a library of templates and previous proposals for organizational learning and efficiency.
- Document lessons learned from past proposals to improve future submissions.
- Support reporting and donor communication efforts as needed, including writing updates and progress reports.
Skills & Qualifications
- At least 1-2 years of experience in grant writing, proposal development, fundraising or related fields.
- Experience working with CBOs, NGOs or community-based projects is an added advantage.
- Strong written communication skills in English.
- Ability to write clear, persuasive and structured proposals tailored to different donors.
- Competence in researching funding opportunities and understanding donor requirements.
- Comfortable working independently or collaboratively.
- Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to accept feedback and revise drafts as needed.
- Reliable, organized and able to meet deadlines.
- Committed to the mission and values of Tenda Wema CBO.
- Comfortable working remotely and using online tools
- Able to commit to a voluntary engagement for 6 months
