About Mentor A Promise
Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, literacy enrichment, academic support, creative arts, social-emotional learning, community engagement, and innovative storytelling, MAP builds safe, empowering spaces where young people can grow and thrive.
Visual storytelling is essential to MAP’s mission. Across MAP Roots (in-person programming), MAP Connect (virtual), Threads of Voices, PromisePress, The Bells I Hear, PromisePlay, and our broader media and advocacy initiatives, strong visual design helps us share youth stories, elevate our brand, and communicate impact with clarity and heart.
About the Role
We are seeking a Graphic Designer to support MAP’s visual identity across digital platforms, campaigns, educational materials, and storytelling initiatives. The ideal candidate is creative, detail-oriented, and passionate about design that serves a meaningful social purpose.
This role is perfect for designers looking to build a mission-driven portfolio while using their creative talent to uplift youth and strengthen MAP’s public presence.
Key Responsibilities
- Design digital and print materials, including social media graphics, flyers, posters, newsletters, presentations, and program assets.
- Support MAP’s brand identity by ensuring cohesive visual style across all divisions.
- Collaborate with the Marketing Lead, Social Media Lead, YouTube Production Lead, Podcast Team, and Storytelling & Media Division.
- Create visuals for Threads of Voices, The Bells I Hear, MAP Roots events, MAP Connect programs, and MAP fundraising campaigns.
- Support the design of book covers, layouts, and visual elements for PromisePress publications (as needed).
- Develop simple graphics or animations for MAP’s YouTube channel and digital storytelling content.
- Maintain organized design files and contribute to MAP’s evolving brand library.
- Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours.
- Take responsibility for performance improvement by integrating feedback, refining design processes, and exploring creative growth opportunities.
Qualifications
- Experience with graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, or similar).
- Strong visual storytelling skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional creative, marketing, and program teams.
- Strong understanding of typography, layout, color theory, and branding.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with consistent deadlines.
- Passion for youth empowerment, equity, and mission-driven creative work.
Bonus Skills (not required)
- Experience in animation, motion graphics, or video design.
- Ability to support UX/UI design for websites or apps.
- Illustration or hand-drawn artwork skills.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred).
Commitment
- Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week.
- Minimum 6-month commitment preferred.
- Hybrid: In-person in NYC and/or remote via Google Meet.
