About Compathos Foundation
Since 2010, Compathos Foundation has advanced environmental stewardship and social well-being through the power of storytelling, education, and community engagement. Building on more than fifteen years of nonprofit leadership, the Foundation has produced award-winning films, educational initiatives, interactive media, public events, and digital platforms that inspire positive environmental and social change.
Our signature initiative, Films for the Planet, is a global streaming platform and event series that connects audiences with award-winning documentaries, filmmakers, scientists, innovators, and thought leaders working to create a more sustainable and compassionate future.
As part of our mission, Compathos Foundation collaborates with award-winning filmmakers, experienced media professionals, educators, scientists, and mission-driven organizations to develop and amplify stories that inspire meaningful action. Through our Fiscal Sponsorship Program, we selectively partner with exceptional independent film and media projects that align with our charitable mission and values.
As our organization continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced financial professional to join our Board of Directors and help guide the Foundation's long-term sustainability while supporting inspiring media projects that create lasting impact.
Position Summary
The Treasurer is an Officer of the Board of Directors and serves as the Foundation's Chief Financial Officer for governance purposes. This is a leadership role focused on strategic financial stewardship, fiduciary oversight, and nonprofit accountability—not day-to-day bookkeeping or accounting operations.
The Treasurer/CFO works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Board, bookkeeper, and external CPA to help ensure the Foundation maintains sound financial practices, appropriate internal controls, and responsible stewardship of charitable resources.
As Compathos re-establishes its Fiscal Sponsorship Program, the Treasurer/CFO will provide Board-level financial oversight of sponsored-project funds and related financial procedures. The program's policies, agreements, procedures, and compliance framework are being comprehensively reviewed and updated prior to relaunch, with specialized fiscal sponsorship expertise engaged as needed.
Once established, the Treasurer/CFO will work collaboratively with the Executive Director, bookkeeper, CPA, and Board to help ensure appropriate financial controls, reporting, and stewardship of fiscally sponsored project funds.
Candidates who also bring direct fiscal sponsorship, grantmaking, restricted-fund, or nonprofit compliance experience are especially encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Attend quarterly virtual Board of Directors meetings.
- Review periodic financial reports and advise the Board regarding the Foundation's financial position.
- Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and longer-term financial planning.
- Help ensure appropriate financial policies, internal controls, and nonprofit financial practices are maintained.
- Review financial information to support informed Board decision-making.
- Provide Board-level oversight of organizational assets and charitable funds.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, bookkeeper, and CPA regarding financial reporting, annual filings, and other financial matters.
- Support financial oversight of approximately one to two fiscally sponsored projects annually.
- Review financial procedures for sponsored projects, including project budgets, restricted-fund tracking, grant disbursements, and financial reporting.
- Help ensure appropriate financial controls and policies and procedures are maintained within the Fiscal Sponsorship Program.
- Promote transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of organizational and donor resources.
Board Service Expectations
- Participate actively in quarterly Board meetings and strategic planning discussions.
- Review financial reports and meeting materials in advance.
- Uphold the Foundation's mission, bylaws, governance policies, and fiduciary responsibilities.
- Exercise sound, independent financial judgment in the best interests of the organization.
- Support strong nonprofit governance, transparency, and accountability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience in accounting, finance, financial management, business administration, or nonprofit finance.
- Ability to interpret financial statements, budgets, cash flow, and financial reports.
- Previous experience as a Treasurer, CFO, Controller, Finance Committee member, or nonprofit Board member is preferred.
- Familiarity with nonprofit accounting, restricted funds, grants, or charitable organizations is desirable.
- Strong collaborative, analytical, and communication skills.
- Experience with fiscal sponsorship, grantmaking, sponsored projects, or nonprofit compliance is highly valued but not required.
- CPA or other financial credentials are welcomed but not required.
- Interest in environmental sustainability, storytelling, education, and social impact.
Why Join Our Board?
This is an opportunity to apply your financial expertise to a well-established nonprofit working at the intersection of storytelling, environmental sustainability, education, and social impact.
As Treasurer/CFO, you will help guide the Foundation's financial stewardship and long-term sustainability while working with an experienced team that includes an Executive Director, professional bookkeeper, external CPA, and fellow Board members. The position is focused on oversight and governance rather than transactional accounting.
As our Fiscal Sponsorship Program grows, you will also have the opportunity to support the financial stewardship of a small, carefully selected portfolio of projects created by award-winning filmmakers and experienced media professionals.
Candidates with fiscal sponsorship experience will have an opportunity to contribute that expertise more broadly to the development and governance of the program, while candidates without that specialization will be supported by a separate Board member focused specifically on fiscal sponsorship policy, process, and compliance.
Compensation
This is a volunteer Board Officer position. No financial compensation is provided.
