Job Title: Prisoner Correspondent
Are you passionate about social justice and looking for an opportunity to gain a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective on the American prison experience? As a Prisoner Correspondent, you’ll manage the daily operations of correspondence with over 250 incarcerated authors, artists, and screenwriters, including the work of our incarcerated founder, whose project "The Zo" was adapted into the Marshall Project's Emmy-nominated "Welcome to the Zo" mini-documentary.
This remote volunteer position (with an option for salary upon funding) offers you the chance to directly impact the lives of incarcerated individuals by ensuring the smooth flow of communication and managing their creative work.
Responsibilities:
- Process and sort incoming and outgoing mail for over 250 incarcerated clients
- Respond to prisoner inquiries via template letters, FAQs, and email communication
- Manage e-communication accounts (e.g., Global Tel Link) for seamless email correspondence
- Maintain mail management systems including scanning, logging, and filing
- Ensure compliance with USPS policies and handle shipping/packaging logistics
- Work with carriers to track and adjust mail deliveries as needed
- Provide reports and updates to organizational leadership regarding mail operations
- Contribute to the Media & Marketing Committee by recommending social justice prompts for writing, artwork, and films
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Remote position requiring access to a secure mailing address, internet, scanner, and computer
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and basic software tools
- Strong organizational, decision-making, and multitasking skills
- Ability to manage a flexible schedule and meet deadlines
- Experience interacting with diverse teams, clients, and stakeholders
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Physical dexterity to perform essential job functions
Note: This is a volunteer position with a commitment of at least 5 hours per week.
