Help Adults in Albuquerque Learn to Read - Board Position
Descripción
Descripción
55% of adults in Bernalillo County read below a 6th grade level. New Mexico ranks 49th in the nation for adult literacy. Ethos Literacy is working to change that.
Since 2009, we've provided free, one-on-one tutoring to adults and teens who want to improve their reading, writing, and English skills. Our volunteer tutors contribute over 3,300 hours each year. Half of our students are parents—when we teach them, we help break the cycle for their children too.
We've been recognized as a Best Practices in Literacy Honoree by the Library of Congress and won an Innovation Prize from the National Literacy Directory.
We're looking for Board members who are passionate about education, equity, and community.
What we need right now:
- Development (donor cultivation, grant writing, identifying new funding sources)
- Event planning ('Burque Bee spelling bee, Short Short Story Contest)
- Community outreach & partnerships
- Volunteer recruitment
- Financial oversight
Not ready for a full board seat? We have smaller involvement opportunities—event help, grant research, donor follow-up, etc. Please reach out if this sounds interesting!
The basics:
- 5-10 hours/month
- 12-month term (consecutive terms allowed)
- Monthly meetings for 60-90 minutes (mostly virtual)
- Directors & Officers insurance provided
No nonprofit board experience required—just commitment, skills you're willing to share, and belief that literacy changes everything.
