Volunteer Data Systems & Reporting Assistant

Remote | Approximately 2–3 hours/week | Long-term volunteer opportunity

Rukundo International is seeking a detail-oriented volunteer to assist with the data systems supporting Rukundo Preparatory School in Kabale, Uganda.

RPS collects student information including academic performance, attendance, enrollment, health/growth measurements and other program data. We recently transitioned from a macro-enabled Excel database to a cloud-based system using Tally for data entry, Google BigQuery for data storage and Data Studio for reporting and dashboards.

The volunteer will work alongside our current Data Manager to help maintain and further develop this system while making RPS data accessible and useful to school and organizational leadership.

What you'll do

• Help transfer and validate data from Tally into BigQuery
• Maintain clean, consistent and well-structured datasets
• Identify duplicates, missing information and other data-quality issues
• Write and modify BigQuery/SQL queries
• Develop and improve Data Studio dashboards and reports
• Create filters and reporting tools allowing leadership to examine data by variables such as academic year, term, class, subject and student
• Help develop reporting for student height, weight and growth measurements
• Assist with exporting and backing up organizational data
• Troubleshoot data and reporting issues
• Document processes so the system can be maintained by others in the future
• Protect the confidentiality of student and family information

Time commitment & training

Approximately 2–3 hours per week, with flexibility in when most work is completed.

Our current Data Manager will provide training approximately every other week for 30–60 minutes, particularly during the transition period.

We're looking for someone with

Required:

• Working knowledge of SQL
• Experience working with structured/tabular data
• Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills
• Ability to understand relationships among multiple datasets/tables
• Careful attention to data accuracy and validation
• Ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical users
• Willingness to document their work
• Reliability and interest in an ongoing volunteer role

Strongly preferred:

• Google BigQuery experience
• Data Studio experience
• Experience building interactive dashboards
• Experience with ETL/data pipelines or moving data between systems
• Experience with education, nonprofit, health or longitudinal datasets

A huge plus:

• Experience working with anthropometric/growth data or WHO child-growth standards
