Our volunteers play an essential role in enhancing the patient experience by providing meaningful connections, compassion, and comfort to those in our care. As a Volunteer Barber, your professional skills can have a lasting impact on a patient's confidence, dignity, and overall well-being.
Many of our patients have complex medical needs or limited mobility and may be unable to maintain their usual grooming routine. By providing haircuts and basic grooming services, you can help patients feel refreshed, restore their sense of self, and improve their comfort throughout their hospital stay. A simple haircut can make a meaningful difference, helping someone feel more like themselves during a challenging time.
As part of our volunteer team, you'll work alongside dedicated healthcare professionals to help ensure our patients receive compassionate, person-centered care.

Flexible Scheduling
We understand that everyone has different schedules. Volunteer opportunities are flexible, and we will work with you to create a schedule that fits your availability. Whether you are able to volunteer weekly, biweekly, monthly, or on an occasional basis, we welcome your time and talents.
Qualifications
- Current Massachusetts Barber license (if applicable)
- Compassionate, patient-centered attitude
- Ability to work respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Completion of the hospital's volunteer onboarding requirements, including orientation, health clearance, and background screening

¿Cómo llegar?
Train:
Take the Orange Line to the Forest Hills Station. The walk is about 15 minutes along Arborway and Circuit Dr.
Free Shuttle Bus:
A shuttle van runs regularly from the Hyde Park Avenue side of the station to the hospital. View the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital shuttle schedule to plan your visit.
MBTA Bus:
- The #16 Bus leaves Forest Hills and passes thru Franklin Park stopping at the hospital’s entrance.
- The #21 and #31 buses travel from Forest Hills on Morton Street, stopping at the pedestrian entrance to the hospital.

Letters of references are acceptable and may be submitted with this application or sent directly to the Volunteer Services office. Letters must include contact information. Please reach out at 617-971-3041 for more information.
Hospital policies do not allow LSH patients or families to volunteer in the department that have provided direct care to the patient nor those who provide related or similar care within 12 months.
Once approved, the next steps will be to schedule an on-site visit for the Health Screening (TST) and CORI/Background Check.
