    Conservation Outreach Intern

Internship opportunities are available every semester. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

The Quantico Conservation Volunteer Program (CVP) engages community members, veterans, and students in hands-on conservation, habitat restoration, and environmental education projects that support Marine Corps Base Quantico’s natural resource management goals. We are seeking a motivated and organized Conservation Outreach Intern to help grow and strengthen this dynamic program.

This internship is ideal for students pursuing degrees in nonprofit management, environmental studies, conservation, or communications, and provides professional experience in volunteer coordination, outreach, and environmental program support within a federal installation setting.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist with helping coordinate opportunities in habitat restoration, trail maintenance, wildlife monitoring, and more.
    • Develop and share communications materials—including volunteer newsletters and event flyers—to highlight program activities and conservation outcomes.
    • Support orientation sessions and special events, helping ensure volunteers are well-informed, safe, and engaged.
    • Help maintain volunteer records and data tracking systems to document participation and impact metrics.
    • Contribute to program improvement efforts, such as developing recognition initiatives and refining standard operating procedures.
    • Participate in conservation field days or educational activities to gain hands-on understanding of volunteer-supported projects.

    Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship, the Volunteer Coordination Intern will:

    • Understand the principles of effective volunteer management.
    • Gain experience in nonprofit operations and program communications.
    • Build skills in community engagement, leadership, and teamwork.
    • Strengthen their knowledge of natural resource management and environmental stewardship in a federal context.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Coursework or experience in nonprofit management, environmental studies, conservation, communications, or related fields.
    • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
    • Comfort working both independently and as part of a team.
    • Familiarity with digital tools such as Canva and Google Suite is a plus.
    • A genuine interest in conservation, volunteer engagement, and public service.

    Benefits

    • Meaningful experience working with conservation professionals and volunteers.
    • Mentorship in both volunteer management and environmental program coordination.
    • Eligibility for academic credit.
    • Flexible scheduling to accommodate coursework.

We prefer to work with interns who are earning course credit and/or those who would like to conduct independent research on base, simply because we recognize unpaid internships can be a hardship. But earning credit is not necessary. With course-credit internships, we ask interns to commit to at least 50 hours across a semester. For non-course credit internships, we ask interns to commit to at least 50 hours across three months.
