OC Literacy is seeking compassionate, dependable volunteer tutors to work one-to-one with adult learners in Orange County, NC.
Our adult students come from a wide range of educational backgrounds and skill levels - from individuals building foundational reading, writing, and math skills to those preparing for the GED/HiSET or working toward community college success. Because every learner’s journey is different, we focus on individualized instruction built around each student’s goals, strengths, and needs.
We are looking for empathetic volunteers who enjoy encouraging others and can commit to working with a an adult learner approximately 2–4 hours per week, including some lesson planning and preparation. Tutoring takes place in public community settings such as libraries or community centers, or online depending on the learner’s needs.
Volunteer tutors may support learners with:
Reading and writing skills
Math and numeracy
GED/HiSET preparation
English language learning (when appropriate)
Basic digital literacy
Community college readiness and academic support
No teaching background is required. We provide orientation, training, instructional materials, and ongoing support. What matters most is patience, encouragement, reliability, and a belief that adult learners deserve dignity, respect, and opportunities to succeed.
