Board Chair

The Heart of Art is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to using the performing arts as a gateway to foster literacy, education, creativity, and community building. We empower children and youth through programs that combine the magic of storytelling with the transformative power of the arts.

The Board Chair serves as the senior volunteer leader of The Heart of Art’s Board of Directors. This individual partners closely with the Executive Director to ensure the organization remains mission-aligned, financially sustainable, and strategically positioned to expand its impact across the DMV.

The Chair leads governance, cultivates an engaged board culture, and serves as a public-facing ambassador of The Heart of Art.

• Term of Service- April 1, 2026 – April 1, 2028 (Two-Year Term)
• Annual Board Contribution-Give-or-Get Requirement: $1,000 per year
• Location Preference- DMV residents strongly preferred (Washington, DC; Maryland; Virginia)

General Expectations

All board members are expected to actively participate in governance, attend meetings, support fundraising, maintain confidentiality, and provide strategic guidance for organizational growth.

Key Responsibilities

Board Leadership & Governance

• Facilitate all board meetings, ensuring productive discussion, accountability, and decision-making
• Ensure the Board fulfills its fiduciary and governance responsibilities
• Guide board members in understanding their roles, expectations, and committee leadership
• Support recruitment, onboarding, and development of new board members

Strategic Partnership with Executive Leadership

• Serve as the primary liaison between the Board and the Executive Director Bylaws- HOA Inaugural Year
• Provide mentorship and strategic support to the Executive Director as the organization grows
• Collaborate on organizational priorities, challenges, and long-term planning

External Representation & Advocacy

• Represent The Heart of Art at key community, donor, and partner engagements
• Serve as a spokesperson for the organization’s mission and values
• Help strengthen visibility, credibility, and community trust

Fundraising & Sustainability

• Lead by example in meeting the annual give-or-get expectation
• Support donor cultivation and board fundraising initiatives
• Assist in securing long-term sustainability for programs and operations

Qualifications

• Prior nonprofit board leadership or governance experience preferred
• Strong facilitation, communication, and relationship-building skills
• Commitment to racial equity, youth empowerment, and arts access
• DMV residency preferred

Time Commitment

Approximately 20+ hours/month, with at least 75% meeting attendance required
