Volunteer Math Tutor Needed for Middle School Students | Oxon Hill, MD

Do you enjoy math and want to make a meaningful difference in a student’s life? Northstar Tutoring is looking for volunteer math tutors to work one-on-one with middle school students at our Oxon Hill Middle School location in Fort Washington, Maryland.

While we are especially looking for volunteers who are comfortable helping with math, we also welcome volunteers interested in tutoring English Language Arts (ELA) and reading. You do not need to be an expert or have previous tutoring or teaching experience. Northstar provides materials and support to help you feel prepared for each session.

Northstar Tutoring’s mission is to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. By pairing each student with a dedicated tutor and mentor, Northstar provides free academic support along with the consistency and individual attention that can make a lasting difference.

Schedule & Location

Tutoring takes place at Oxon Hill Middle School, 9570 Fort Foote Road, Fort Washington, MD, every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Most tutors commit to one day per week, although volunteers are welcome to attend both days if their schedule allows.

What Tutoring Looks Like

Each tutor is matched with the same student for the duration of the school year, giving tutors and students the opportunity to build a strong, consistent relationship.

Students are in sixth through eighth grade, and tutoring focuses primarily on math and reading/ELA. Volunteers are welcome to let us know which subject and grade levels they feel most comfortable tutoring. Northstar provides academic materials, and staff members are available during sessions to provide guidance and support.

No Tutoring Experience Required

You do not need to be a teacher, education major, or experienced tutor to volunteer. Many Northstar tutors are brand new to tutoring when they join us. We are looking for dependable, caring adults who are willing to show up consistently and help a student build their skills and confidence.

Beyond regular tutoring sessions, volunteers are encouraged, though not required, to participate in mentoring activities with their students. These can be as simple as visiting a museum, attending a sporting event, going to the movies, or meeting at a local library for an additional tutoring session.

Cannot commit every week? Northstar also welcomes substitute tutors who can provide occasional coverage when a regular tutor is unavailable.

Northstar accepts new students throughout the school year, which means new tutors can join us at any time.
