Position Title: Board of Trustees Chairperson (Volunteer)

Organization: Open Doors Academy (or your school name)

Location: Remote / Hybrid

Commitment: Volunteer (Approx. 5–8 hours per month)

Position Overview

The Board of Trustees Chairperson is a volunteer leadership role responsible for leading the Board of Trustees and ensuring effective governance of the organization. The Chair works closely with the Executive Director/Head of School to guide strategic direction, facilitate board operations, and uphold the mission and values of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Board Leadership

• Lead and facilitate all board meetings in an organized and effective manner
• Set meeting agendas in collaboration with the Executive Director
• Ensure active participation and engagement from all board members

Governance & Oversight

• Ensure the board fulfills its legal, ethical, and fiduciary responsibilities
• Oversee implementation of board policies and bylaws
• Guide the board in strategic planning and decision-making

Executive Support & Accountability

• Serve as the primary liaison between the Board and the Executive Director
• Provide support, guidance, and evaluation of the Executive Director
• Ensure accountability and alignment with organizational goals

Strategic Direction

• Help shape and monitor the organization’s mission, vision, and long-term strategy
• Lead discussions on growth, sustainability, and impact

Financial Stewardship

• Ensure the board reviews and approves budgets and financial reports
• Support fundraising, grant efforts, and resource development

Advocacy & Representation

• Act as a spokesperson and ambassador for the organization
• Build relationships with partners, donors, and community stakeholders
• Promote an inclusive, LGBTQ+-affirming environment

Qualifications

• Strong leadership and facilitation skills
• Experience in governance, nonprofit leadership, or education (preferred)
• Ability to guide discussions and build consensus
• Commitment to the organization’s mission and values

Expectations

• Attend and lead all board meetings
• Communicate regularly with the Executive Director and board members
• Participate in committees or special initiatives as needed
• Uphold confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism

Compensation

This is a volunteer, unpaid position. The role offers leadership experience and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
