Grants & Fundraising Intern (Volunteer Internship)

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

Location: Remote (with potential NYC-based collaboration)

Type: Volunteer Internship (Pro Bono, with potential for academic credit or future stipend)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, literacy development, creative expression, and housing initiatives, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

As MAP expands into affordable housing and community development, we are establishing new pathways for impact through our housing initiatives and partnerships. We are seeking a motivated Grants & Fundraising Intern to support early-stage fundraising and grant-seeking efforts. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain real-world experience in nonprofit development and affordable housing finance while contributing to a growing, mission-driven organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Research and track grant opportunities (city, state, federal, and private foundations)
    • Assist in drafting and editing grant proposals, applications, and letters of inquiry
    • Help develop and maintain a grants and fundraising calendar
    • Support the creation of donor communication materials, including appeal letters, newsletters, and impact blurbs
    • Participate in team meetings and observe the real-world development and fundraising process
    • Check and respond to emails daily, ensuring all responses are completed within 48 hours
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by identifying and implementing ways to strengthen research and proposal processes

    What You’ll Gain

    • Training and mentorship in nonprofit fundraising and grant writing
    • Exposure to affordable housing development and community-based finance
    • Portfolio experience with grant proposals, donor communications, and funding research
    • Collaboration with experienced nonprofit leaders, fundraisers, and housing developers
    • The opportunity to make a tangible impact in a growing, mission-driven organization

    Ideal Candidate

    • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Nonprofit Management, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Business, or related fields
    • Strong writing, editing, and research skills
    • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to track multiple deadlines
    • Interest in affordable housing, social justice, or community development
    • Strong communication skills and a collaborative work ethic

    Commitment

    • Flexible, part-time, remote-friendly internship
    • Estimated 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 3–6 month commitment preferred
    • This is a pro bono / volunteer internship, with potential for academic credit
    • A small stipend may be available depending on future funding
