Board Member: Northeast Organic Farmers Association of Massachusetts

Through education and advocacy NOFA/Mass promotes organic agriculture to expand the production and availability of nutritious food from living soil for the health of individuals, communities and the planet.

    Our Vision:

NOFA/Mass envisions a commonwealth of people working together to create healthy landscapes that feed our communities and restore our environment.

    About the Role:

NOFA/Mass is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors of approximately 7 to 11 members. The board sets strategic direction, ensures the organization's financial health, and supports the Executive Director and staff in carrying out NOFA/Mass's mission. We are currently seeking new members to join the board.

We are especially interested in candidates who bring nonprofit governance, finance/accounting, fundraising, farming or food-systems experience, legal expertise, communications/marketing, and/or lived experience connected to our mission. No prior board experience is required; we provide onboarding and support for new members.

Consistent with our commitment to equity, NOFA/Mass is actively working to build a board that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve, and we strongly encourage applications from Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, and from candidates of diverse economic, geographic, and lived backgrounds.

Responsibilities of a member of the Board of Directors of NOFA/Mass:

    • Support and participate in NOFA/Mass’ work to dismantle racism
    • Participate actively in educational and member service programs and projects via working group or committees;
    • Provide responsible oversight of NOFA/Mass through membership active participation in at least one board standing committee. The committees are: Development, Education, Finance, Leadership Team, Board Development, Communications.
    • Be an advocate and spokesperson for NOFA/Mass in accordance with the stated goals and policies of the organization.
    • Attend all board meetings (6-8 per year).
    • Attend both board/staff retreats (early December and mid June)
    • Attend Annual Meeting
    • Attend Winter Conference
    • Attend one regional networking or tabling event annually.
    • Participate in some aspect of NOFA/Mass’ fundraising
    • Make a yearly financial and/or in-kind donation to NOFA/Mass.

All NOFA/Mass board members are expected to be members of NOFA/Mass. A Board of Director term runs for two years and renewed every two years for up to six years total.. The board works to support the educational purposes of NOFA/Mass and to maintain clear direction for the organization.
