DAISY's Little Sprouts Book Club Volunteers

🌼 Volunteer with DAISY’s Little Sprouts – Help Children Build Emotional Wellness Through Reading

Creative Mental Wellness, a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is seeking compassionate volunteers to support DAISY’s Little Sprouts, an in-person children’s book club focused on mental wellness, emotional literacy, and stigma reduction.

Each month, we highlight one age-appropriate book centered on a mental or behavioral health theme.

    Sessions include:

      • Reading the featured book
      • Guided, age-appropriate discussion
      • Hands-on activities that reinforce healthy coping skills
      • Occasional appearances by DAISY The Mental Health Dachshund (our puppet mascot!)

Book clubs are hosted multiple times each month at public libraries and community centers across the Greater Houston area to maximize accessibility for families.

All sessions are facilitated by the Executive Director, a registered nurse and community mental health advocate. Volunteers support programming under supervision in structured, public settings.

    🌱 Volunteer Responsibilities

    Volunteers may assist with:

      • Setting up and breaking down events
      • Greeting children and caregivers
      • Helping families get settled
      • Reading books aloud
      • Assisting with activity stations
      • Supporting a warm, welcoming environment

Time commitment: 1–3 hours per session, depending on availability.

Volunteers do not provide one-on-one supervision or counseling. Parents/caregivers remain present during sessions.

    🎓 Ideal For:

      • High school students seeking service hours
      • College students (pre-med, nursing, education, psychology, social work, public health)
      • Individuals interested in pediatric mental health
      • Future teachers or child development professionals
      • Community members passionate about preventative mental wellness

Service hour documentation is available upon request.

Optional opportunities are also available for volunteers to assist with program planning, outreach, and development.

    💚 Why Volunteer?

    By volunteering, you will:

      • Support early mental health literacy
      • Help reduce stigma through education and dialogue
      • Contribute to preventative, community-based wellness efforts
      • Gain meaningful experience in child-focused programming

Creative Mental Wellness is intentional about ensuring volunteers benefit personally while contributing meaningfully to the community.

If you’re interested in helping children build resilience—one story at a time—we would love to connect with you.

Volunteers complete a brief intake conversation prior to participating to ensure alignment with program values and expectations. A structured volunteer guidebook and orientation are provided to help volunteers feel confident, prepared, and supported — regardless of prior experience working with children.

You don't have to be a reader to help us. It's more important to care about health than be an avid reader for this program. Having readers help us is an added bonus, but it's not necessary. We just need a willing heart to help others through hosting book clubs that encourage reading and connection to boost mental wellness.
