Thacher Montessori School, a small, community-oriented, mission-driven independent Montessori school, is seeking a strategic and experienced financial leader to join our Board of Trustees as Treasurer. As we look toward the 2026–2027 academic year, we are seeking a professional who can provide high-level financial oversight to ensure the school’s long-term sustainability and continued strength. This is a unique opportunity for a professional with financial background to apply their expertise in support of a thriving educational community.
The Role
The Treasurer serves as a key officer of the Board, acting as a bridge between the school's administration and the Board of Trustees. Primary responsibilities include:
- Financial Oversight: Monitoring the school's financial health, reviewing monthly financial statements, and ensuring the integrity of the school's fiscal records.
- Strategic Budgeting: Collaborating with the Head of School and the Business Office Manager to develop and monitor the annual operating budget.
- Audit & Compliance: Overseeing the audit process, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP).
- Governance: Serving as a member of the Executive Committee and Chairperson of the Finance Committee.
What We're Looking For
- Qualified CPA/Finance Experience: Five years of Accounting or financial management experience, an active CPA license preferred.
- Nonprofit Expertise: Familiarity with nonprofit financial reporting and restricted fund accounting is highly preferred.
- Educational Sector Interest: A passion for independent schools or the broader education sector.
- Communication Skills: Ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non-financial board members.
Commitment
This is a volunteer position, and we seek commitment for a term of 3 years.
- Board meetings are held 6 times per year, generally half on Zoom and half as in-person meetings, with a one day in-person retreat in the fall.
- Finance Committee meetings occur 6-7 times per year as preparation for board meetings.
