One in four adults in San Joaquin County lacks basic literacy skills. Imagine getting through your day without being able to read street signs, news, text messages, emails, warning labels, prescription instructions, etc.
The Adult Literacy Program enables adults to develop their literacy skills, achieve their individual learning goals, and use library services effectively. Our trained volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring for English-speaking adults who are struggling with reading.
Volunteers are asked to meet with their learners at least once a week. Meetings take place at the most convenient library out of the 13 library branches in San Joaquin County. Tutors must be 18 years of age, pass a background check, and be able to read and write competently in English. Tutoring materials are provided.
