    Foundation Fundraiser

    Volunteer Opportunity: Founding Fundraiser

Help us lay the foundations for our future as a registered charity

We’re at a pivotal moment. The Journal of West Studies — a not-for-profit, partially open-access journal exploring the history, heritage, and contemporary issues of the West — is ready to take the next big step: becoming a registered charity. To get there, we need someone who can lead our fundraising efforts from the ground up.

This is not a role for someone looking to “just help out.” This is for someone who’s been in the fundraising trenches before — whether in the charity sector, community projects, or other initiatives — and knows how to turn ideas into income.

    What makes this role different

    • A blank canvas – You’ll be our first dedicated fundraiser. No legacy systems, no “this is how we’ve always done it.” You’ll shape the strategy, the campaigns, and the culture of giving from day one.
    • A real, tangible impact – The funds you raise will directly determine how quickly we can establish ourselves as a charity and expand our reach.
    • A cause with depth – Our work connects academics, policymakers, and the public in meaningful conversations about the West’s past, present, and future.

    What you’ll be doing

    • Designing and launching our very first fundraising strategy.
    • Identifying and approaching potential donors, sponsors, and grant-makers.
    • Creating campaigns (online and offline) that inspire people to give.
    • Building relationships with supporters and partners.
    • Advising the team on best practices for sustainable income generation.

    What we’re looking for

    • Previous fundraising experience — you’ve done this before, in some form, and know what works.
    • A self-starter who’s comfortable working independently and making decisions.
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to inspire others to get behind a cause.
    • Creativity, persistence, and a willingness to try new approaches.

What you’ll get out of it

    • The satisfaction of knowing you’ve been instrumental in helping a not-for-profit become a registered charity.
    • The freedom to shape a role and strategy without being tied to outdated processes.
    • A collaborative, intellectually stimulating environment with a small but committed team.
    • Flexible hours (approx. 3–4 per week) and remote working.

If you’re ready to take on a challenge that will leave a lasting legacy — and you have the experience to make it happen — we’d love to hear from you.
