The Social Visitation Volunteer plays a vital role in fostering connection, dignity, and belonging among Maybelle Center members. Working in pairs, volunteers visit individuals experiencing social isolation in Old Town/Downtown Portland, offering companionship, active listening, and consistent presence. Through relationship-building and outreach, volunteers help strengthen community and support members’ well-being.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build meaningful, trusting relationships with Maybelle members through regular weekly visits
- Engage in conversation, games, and shared activities that promote connection and dignity
- Practice active, compassionate listening
- Support member self-advocacy and connect individuals to Maybelle Center as appropriate
- Travel by foot, public transit, or car to visit members in the downtown area or SROs
- Visit 2–6 members per volunteer shift
- Complete our volunteer service log and engage in an optional debrief with staff following each visit (in person or phone)
- Communicate clearly with volunteer partners, members, and the Volunteer Coordinator or Program Manager regarding scheduling and visits
- Honor privacy, confidentiality, and professional boundaries

- Respectful and sensitive to diverse and marginalized populations
- Ability to offer nonjudgmental presence and support
- Commitment to reducing social isolation and building community in Downtown Portland
- Dependable and able to work independently and as part of a team
- At least 18 years of age
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to walk up to a half mile in the Old Town/Downtown area
- Ability to climb stairs and navigate SRO buildings
- Comfortable sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods during visits
ORIENTATION AND TRAINING
- Required orientation covering Maybelle Center’s mission, values, and volunteer expectations
- Training in visitation safety, policies, boundaries, and best practices
- Ongoing support and guidance from the Program Manager and Volunteer Coordinator
- Optional participation in quarterly Engage & Educate volunteer training sessions

We recognize that availability can vary and welcome volunteers to engage at a pace that aligns with their capacity. While visits are typically scheduled weekly during weekday afternoons, we value consistency and care in honoring commitments made to members. Volunteering takes place in Old Town/Downtown Portland, including the Maybelle Center, Macdonald Residence, affordable housing, and nearby Single Room Occupancy (SRO) buildings.
