Recruiting Volunteer Mentor for Fresh Air City Explorers!

The Fresh Air Fund’s newest year-round program - Fresh Air City Explorers, piloting in the 2025-2026 school year - creates an impactful network between New York City youth, their peers and trusted adults. The program provides safe, fun, interactive and engaging outdoor activities that introduce Fresh Air Fund participants to new ideas, people, places and skills while building community in NYC. By engaging youth in various outdoor activities within the 5 boroughs, led by Fresh Air staff members and guided by Volunteer Mentors, our mission is to enrich campers’ current skillsets, interests, independence, leadership skills and confidence. Become a Mentor to support children in experiencing the outdoors in NYC!

What will I do as a City Explorers Mentor?

• Develop positive mentoring relationships with youth while exploring NYC!
• Chaperone youth on staff-led day trips throughout the 5 boroughs of NYC!
• Ensure youth safety and engagement during experiences!
• Join a group of committed volunteers and NYC staff members to make a positive impact on NYC youth!
• Learn about the amazing outdoors here in NYC and visit parks, waterfronts, cultural institutions and more!
• Build your own network by meeting new people, visiting new places and experiencing new opportunities!

Requirements:

• Aged 18 years or older
• Complete application, interview, background check (FAF covers cost) and volunteer training
• Weekend Availability (10 sessions on Saturdays between October 2025 - May 2026)
  • Dates: 10/4, 10/25, 11/8, 12/13, 1/10, 2/7, 3/14, 3/28, 4/18, 5/1
• Commitment to at least one program year (October -May) - preferably open to multiple years
• Interest in working with children and excitement to explore the outdoors in NYC
• Previous work and/or volunteer history with children (preferred)
• Knowledge and experience (or desire to learn) NYC transit systems (preferred)
