Organisational Overview

Cimilo iyo Caafimaad is a youth-led initiative focused on the intersection of climate change, health, and community resilience in Somalia and across the Somali diaspora. Through community-driven research, storytelling, and advocacy, Cimilo iyo Caafimaad works to elevate Somali perspectives in climate-health conversations and support community-informed responses to emerging public health challenges.

About the Role

We are seeking a creative, strategic, and collaborative Head of Communications & Engagement to lead the organization’s communications, digital engagement, and public storytelling efforts.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about communications, digital advocacy, climate justice, public health, and youth engagement, who enjoys translating complex issues into accessible, engaging, and community-centered storytelling and content.

The Head of Communications will work closely with the Executive Director and broader team to strengthen Cimilo iyo Caafimaad‘s digital presence, expand community engagement, and support advocacy campaigns through strategic communications and storytelling..

Key Responsibilities

Communications & Digital Strategy

• Lead the development and implementation of communications and social media strategies to strengthen Cimilo iyo Caafimaad‘s online presence and engage young people in climate-health advocacy efforts.
• Support the development of communications campaigns aligned with Cimilo iyo Caafimaad‘s advocacy priorities, programs, and community engagement initiatives.
• Ensure consistent messaging, tone, and visual identity across all communications platforms and materials.
• Collaborate closely with the Executive Director and volunteer team to align communications efforts with broader organizational priorities and goals.

Content Creation & Storytelling

• Create and curate compelling digital content, including graphics, videos, written content, newsletters, and multimedia storytelling materials.
• Support the development of community-centered storytelling initiatives that amplify Somali and diaspora perspectives on climate and health.
• Draft and edit newsletters, social media captions, website content, briefing materials, and advocacy communications.
• Maintain and regularly update the organization’s website, social media platforms, and communications materials.

Social Media & Community Engagement

• Oversee and grow Cimilo iyo Caafimaad‘s digital platforms, including Instagram, LinkedIn, Substack and the organization’s website.
• Monitor social media engagement and conversations related to climate, health, and advocacy priorities, responding thoughtfully and professionally where appropriate.
• Track communications and social media performance metrics and provide regular updates and recommendations to the team.
• Support outreach and engagement with youth networks, partners, collaborators, and broader community audiences.

Internal Communications Support

• Develop and circulate organizational newsletters and updates for volunteers, partners, and broader constituency networks.
• Support the preparation and updating of presentation slides and communications materials for meetings, consultations, and constituency calls.
• Assist in maintaining organized communications systems, digital assets, and content calendars.

Required Skills & Experience

• Experience in communications, digital media, advocacy, nonprofit work, journalism, marketing, public health, or community engagement is strongly preferred.
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, creatively, and accessibly. (Somali is an asset).
• Experience managing social media platforms and creating digital content across multiple formats.
• Familiarity with graphic design, video editing, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar digital tools is an asset.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a remote and community-centered environment.
