    ASL Deaf Literacy Dept. Coordinator (make your own hours/ flexible)

    Anixter Adult Literacy Program is seeking a volunteer to work with the Literacy Coordinator to support our deaf and hard of hearing clients. The time commitment is very flexible—work the hours you desire, depending on your interest and availability.

    The primary area of focus would be to enhance our deaf learner program and grow the base of qualified ASL tutors.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    • Coordinate and meet with deaf learners and tutors
    • Coordinate social media posts for tutor recruiting through Anixter Literacy and Anixter Center accounts.
    • Regular outreach to select organizations for tutor recruiting, such as AmeriCorps, Illinois Retired Teacher Association, etc.
    • Work with Literacy Coordinator to recruit appropriate tutor volunteers and coordinate necessary training.
    • Help manage tutor pipeline and onboarding, including recruitment, application process, training, etc.
    • Regular posting of ASL Deaf Tutor job ads on sites such as AARP, Indeed, The Idealist (formerly Volunteer Match), etc.
    • Research, adapt and refine literacy curriculum for use by adult learners who are dear or hard of hearing.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • ASL/ENGLISH Bilingual (Proficient in English and ASL. - Must take ASL proficiency test)
    • Must possess a current driver’s license
    • Bachelor's Degree
    • community relations, sales, or teaching experience preferred
    • Ability to promote and adhere to company values. And commit to a diverse, inclusive environment.

    ENVIRONMENT:

    Physical Demands: must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Must have healthy vision/eye site. Must have healthy physical mobility or have assisted support equipment to enable mobility.

    Work Environment: The main office is in Chicago (1801 S. Berteau Ave. 60613). Will visit Office environments and Off-site meetings in public settings. Anixter Center is a social services non-profit representing people with disabilities. The Literacy Program at Anixter works with clients to improve functional literacy for employment and social situations.

    Travel: Must own an operating vehicle. Must travel to meetings within the Chicago metropolitan area.
