For over 30 years, Minds Matter NYC has connected driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college create their future and change the world. Volunteer with Minds Matter NYC and help low-income students achieve their college dreams.
WRITING & CRITICAL THINKING ADVISOR ROLE OVERVIEW
- Writing & Critical Thinking (WCT) Advisors help students develop their writing voice, make arguments using supporting evidence, and learn critical thinking skills.
- Advisors work in pairs to lead small groups in a structured curriculum (provided by MMNYC), focusing on the writing and revision process, constructive feedback, and coaching students on grammar usage and critical reading.
- With your help, MMNYC students develop strong personal narratives for college applications and enter college ready to write.

TIME COMMITMENT
- Writing Advisors commit to volunteering for one academic year, September to May.
- Sessions take place on Saturdays from 12 PM to 2:30 PM. There are no sessions over major holidays or school breaks.
- Each academic year contains 23 sessions from September to May
- Volunteers are required to attend 80% of the sessions.
LOCATION
Sessions take place in Chinatown.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate of a four-year college or university
- Team-oriented, responsive, active listener who can serve as a role model for young people
- Must uphold Minds Matter NYC’s values of community, commitment, and growth
- Must pass a background check
- Available in person on Saturdays
