Role Summary
The Deputy Chief Journalist serves as the second-in-command within The Sentinel newsroom, supporting the Chief Journalist in leading editorial strategy, managing contributors, and ensuring consistent, high-quality storytelling aligned with Yuvoice’s mission and values.
This role blends editorial leadership, operational coordination, and hands-on journalism support. You will help shape what stories get told, how they are told, and ensure contributors are supported and accountable.
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Leadership and Strategy
- Support development and execution of editorial priorities and content calendar
- Help define coverage areas, themes, and storytelling standards
- Step in for the Chief Journalist when needed
Contributor Management
- Oversee a team of volunteer journalists, writers, and editors
- Assign stories, set deadlines, and track progress
- Provide feedback, coaching, and mentorship to contributors
Content Oversight
- Review and edit submissions for clarity, accuracy, tone, and alignment with Yuvoice values
- Ensure ethical journalism standards and fact-checking practices are followed
- Maintain consistency in voice and storytelling quality
Operations and Workflow
- Help build and maintain newsroom processes (pitch intake, approvals, publishing workflow)
- Track story pipeline and publishing timelines
- Collaborate with marketing and social teams to amplify published content
Community and Culture
- Foster an inclusive, supportive environment for global contributors
- Encourage diverse perspectives and underrepresented voices
- Reinforce Yuvoice values of resilience, boldness, creativity, justice, and well-being
Qualifications
- Experience in journalism, writing, editing, or content leadership
- Strong editorial judgment and storytelling ability
- Experience managing or mentoring contributors or teams preferred
- Ability to balance strategy with execution in a fast-moving environment
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Passion for mission-driven storytelling and community impact

Time Commitment
- Approximately 8–12 hours per week
