JOB SUMMARY

Experienced leader for a non-credited recreational or sports program. Designs, creates, implements and instructs recreational programs for participants of all ages. Required to demonstrate considerable discretion, initiative and independence to resolve issues and perform other duties as assigned. The PE Sailing Instructor will instruct Physical Education sailing classes and Summer Community Boating classes under the direction of the Boating Director. The Sailing Instructor is expected to instruct beginning through advanced keel boat and dinghy sailing classes. Additionally, significant maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, boat rigging, fiberglass repair, engine repair/maintenance, and hull painting will be required.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $55,000 - $65,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES65% -

• Instruct all levels of sailing in both dinghies and keel boats. Give instruction through demonstrations, evaluations, and feedback. Topics to include proper rigging, nomenclature, seamanship, proper boat handling techniques, boating and aquatic safety, high-performance sailing, anchoring, racing, and use of spinnakers. Will also provide students with academic scholarly information in reference to the relationship between participation in sailing and physical/mental health. Course load includes 6-9 8-week boating classes per academic year (Fall, Winter, Spring).

15% -

• Instruct approximately 10 2-week community boating courses during the summer quarter and 1-2 half-day recreational sail outings per academic quarter

• Assist with the administration of the sailing club, including quarterly skill-level checkouts/evaluations, and maintaining club database.

• PE class administration tasks such as completing enrollment and course reports, meeting outside of class when needed, and attending quarterly PE departmental meetings.

• Perform basic maintenance tasks related to boat rigging and other related equipment. May include working with fiberglass and/or varnish/paint

• Other duties and projects as assigned by the boating director. Drives university vehicles and trailers for maintenance, routine service, and parking, etc. Travels for conference attendance by driving rental and/or personal vehicle.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Verifiable experience instructing sailing at a variety of levels, individual and group settings.
• Verifiable education in sailing.
• Ability to demonstrate proper technique, evaluate student performance, and give meaningful feedback.
• Proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
• Thorough knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.
• Ability to effectively communicate with and be sensitive to the needs of an ethnically diverse population.
• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.
• Highly effective verbal communication skills in the English language.
• Highly effective written communication skills in the English language.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with sailboat maintenance and repair, including inboard and outboard engines.
• US Coast Guard OUPV License
• US Powerboating Instructor Certification

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
• Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
• Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
• US Sailing Instructor Certification or have the ability to obtain it within 90-calendar days of hire.
• Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
• Ability to work long periods of time in wilderness conditions and to travel to remote areas.
• Ability to walk to and work in remote areas with rugged terrain, heavy brush, biting and stinging insects, bears and mountain lions.
• Must have the ability to: operate a vacuum, floor scrubber, and polisher; use cleaning chemical compounds; perform essential custodial duties including dumping bags into dumpster or moving equipment and materials with or without accommodations.
• Ability to conduct outdoor site visits, including use of required personal protective equipment, as required to conduct investigations, inspections, or view work in place.
• Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
• The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
• Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
• Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
• Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
• Ability to wear a respirator in accordance with the California Code of Regulations Title 8, 5144.
• Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
• Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
• Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment when conducting boating maintenance and repairs. Ability to occasionally work in confined spaces such as boat interiors or engine room while bending/stooping or kneeling with the possibility of being exposed to live circuits and machinery.
• Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.

Sensitive information includes but is not limited to employee and student records, health and patient records, financial data, strategic plans, proprietary information and any other sensitive or non-public information learned during the course and scope of employment.
