ARED has developed business in a box solar kiosk to deliver key services such as cell phone charging, mobile money, airtime and soon internet to people at the base of the pyramid. We use a franchise business model to empower people through micro entrepreneurship. In East Africa 30% of the youth are unemployed, and its around 50% in slumps. Less than 20% of the people have access to electricity and less than 10% have internet access. We started testing our first prototype in January 2013 in Kigali Rwanda, as of today we currently have 25 kiosks on the ground, we have partnership with Airtel Rwanda and Redcross international. We served 40000 customers in 2015. But we realize that the only way we can make this type of business sustainable at the BOP level, is to increase the amount of corporate partner we have and create value for them to use our distribution platform. So we decided to develop the next generation kiosk that have analytical capabilities such as GPS, system, sensor technology, build- in intranet system so we can offer local digital content, for the growing population with smart phone, for free. Our software system will allow incorporating advertisement services, survey, digital campaign much more efficiently therefore increase our revenue and minimize our dependency on the end user that make less than $5 a day.
