Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site

Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site is a unit of the South Carolina State Park Service. It was active as a plantation from 1811 to 1939. By 1860, William Henry Gist, who was then owner of Rose Hill and governor of South Carolina, held 178 people in bondage, making this one of the largest enslaved communities in Union District. After emancipation, freedpeople from Rose Hill fought for equal rights and full citizenship. Today, the site interprets slavery, secession, the Civil War and Reconstruction, emancipation, sharecropping, and the collapse of the plantation system.
