    Acerca de

Mattamuskeet Lake, at about 40,000 acres, is the largest natural

lake in North Carolina, and has about 10,000 acres of surrounding woodlands and water

impoundments. Each winter we are home to thousands of migrating tundra swans, snow

geese, Canada geese, and a wide variety of ducks. The waterfowl leaves in February-

March. The refuge then becomes popular all spring, summer and fall for fishing and

crabbing. Located in Hyde County (eastern North Carolina), the refuge is an easy drive

to the ocean or some of our larger near-by towns. If you like rustic, rural, picturesque surroundings,

away from bright city lights, we're just the place for you.
