The Community Lawyering and Civil Rights Unit is a new project launched by City Attorney Barbara Parker to prosecute social justice cases in areas including but not limited to housing, wage theft, and civil rights in order to ensure all persons in Oakland are treated fairly and with dignity. This new unit will also draft local ordinances and resolutions, serving as a progressive think tank within local government.

    Acerca de

In August 2016, Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker launched a Community Lawyering and Civil Rights unit (CLCR) to expand the City’s capacity to pursue justice for its marginalized inhabitants-those whose health, welfare and basic rights may go unprotected in the absence of legal advocacy. Deploying a combination of affirmative litigation and policy development, the CLCR team was formed as a response to the role of cities in defending democratic rights and pursuing social and economic justice. Working cooperatively within Oakland’s municipal government, the unit functions both as a progressive think-tank and a small but dedicated legal team.
