    Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides “a different kind of healing” to thousands of children with serious illnesses and their families annually – all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn, in dozens of hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities and through other outreach activities across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

    Position Description:

    The Nursing Director together with the Maryland Medical Director, is responsible for all activities within the Infirmary. During phase 1, the Maryland Camp will provide programming for families only, before ultimately (projected 2029-2030) serving children independently in its full expression (phase 2) as well as continued family camps. The Nursing Director will be responsible for establishing medical policies, emergency procedures, and partnerships with local hospitals. Additionally, the nursing director will oversee the recruitment and onboarding of medical volunteers for camp programs. The nursing director role will continue to evolve over the years and in phase 2 will provide clinical care to campers throughout camper independent programming. The Medical Team will work together to promote the safety and health of campers, families, and staff when Camp is in session. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Nursing Director will model and transmit the Camp culture of Safety, Respect, and Love.

    Our Nursing Director - Maryland can expect to…

    • Take lead in the establishment and operations of the infirmary at the Maryland location.
    • Develop medical policies, procedures and delivery systems for family camps and ultimately campers related to programming and care at the Maryland location.
    • Collaborate with Program Team to ensure medically safe programming.
    • Ensure the routine functioning and emergency preparedness of the Infirmary while also providing a reassuring and welcoming environment for all.
    • Cultivate relationships with healthcare professionals and organizations to maintain and expand family and camper recruitment, establish Camp in local community and help grow the Camp program.
    • Be the primary medical reviewer of family weekend applications for the Maryland site and oversee camper application review once camp is operating at full expression (phase 2).
    • Collaborate with Medical Team to ensure eligibility and standard of care for safe participation.
    • As needed, liaise with caregivers/parents, providers, nurses and others regarding camper care, health and wellness in preparation for and during program participation.
    • Ensure the Maryland Infirmary meets all applicable regulations and standards of care for the State of Maryland Department of Health, OSHA, SeriousFUN Children's Network, the American Camping Association, and all applicable regulatory agencies.
    • Prepare for site visits from regulatory agencies.
    • Maintain all medications, equipment and supplies.
    • Prepare and distribute equipment and supplies to program areas and residential spaces (First Aid Kits, AEDs, Epi-Pens, etc).
    • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, local pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals for obtaining supplies and services (biomedical services, biohazard removal, etc).
    • Recruit, interview, select and onboard medical volunteers.
    • Assist in planning and conducting staff, volunteer (medical and non-medical) and parent orientation programs.
    • Support and educate medical volunteers related to infirmary and safety-related policies as outlined in the Camp and Medical Program Manuals.
    • Ensure proper medical staffing for all on-site activities. Serve as residential Medical Leadership for on-site programming, as assigned.
    • Ensure timely distribution of participant medical information to all stakeholders for programming.
    • Provide direct care within scope of practice and as ordered.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in use of Electronic Medical Record (EMR)/Salesforce. Update, maintain and assure accuracy of medical documentation and information in Salesforce/EMR.
    • Participate as a member of emergency/crisis response team. Assist in emergency drills and situations, as needed.
    • Oversee health forms for staff and volunteers. Review and sign off staff and volunteer health forms as needed per state and Camp regulations.
    • Adhere to the policies and procedures contained in the Camp and Medical Program Manuals.
    • The nursing director will have an opportunity to maintain up to 10 hours per week in a clinical setting and this can be discussed with interested candidates.

    Our Nursing Director - Maryland should have…

    • A State of Maryland Registered Nursing license.
    • Certifications in Pediatric Advanced Life Support/Adult Cardiovascular Life Support and Health Provider CPR.
    • Minimum of 8-10 years clinical nursing experience. Pediatric experience preferred.
    • Minimum of 3-5 years in nursing leadership.
    • Experience working within the SeriosFun Children's Network.
    • Strong organizational and administrative abilities.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • The ability to establish positive relationships with a variety of people in multicultural environments.
    • The ability to multi-task and prioritize workday/projects independently.
    • Clinical knowledge of medical procedures, equipment, protocols used at Camp.
    • A valid driver's license and driving record which meets HITWG insurance carrier requirements. Ability to travel to assigned worksite.
    • A familiarity with key software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Salesforce, etc.) and adaptable digital skills.
    • The ability to operate a computer.
    • The ability to live on site during residential programming. During phase 1, programs will include 8-10 weekends per year.
    • A willingness and ability to work weekend and evening shifts as necessary.
    • The ability to frequently lift more than 25 pounds.
    • A valid Driver's license and driving record which meets HITWG insurance carrier requirements.
