    The mission of the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) is to build, engage, and support our diverse community through programs, services, and activities that connect neighbors and foster civic engagement.

    Position Overview

    The Phinney Neighborhood Association’s Greenwood Senior Center is looking for an experienced chef who will supervise and participate in the preparation and service of daily nutritious lunch meals. The chef will maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment and coordinate with volunteers. The chef will perform basic administrative duties and reporting.

    This position reports to the Director of Senior Programming.

    Essential Responsibilities

    • Supervise and participate in preparation and service of food; prepare main entrees; anticipate and perform preliminary preparation necessary for next day’s meals.
    • Shop for weekly menu and pick-up food donations. Manage budget for the meal program.
    • Inspect food being prepared to ensure proper quantity, quality, and handling; demonstrate and train kitchen volunteers in cooking, preparing, and handling food.
    • Plan, organize, and rotate menus, accounting for inventory. Keeping accurate records and reporting.
    • Lead and participate in the cleaning of the kitchen and equipment; assure that standards of sanitation and safety are met.
    • Perform basic bookkeeping duties; organize and record daily receipts for deposit and ensure proper cash control procedures are followed.
    • Coordinate with Senior Center to integrate the meal program with center activities and goals.
    • Attend regular all-staff meetings and trainings, as requested.
    • Lead a team of kitchen volunteers.
    • Demonstrate an eagerness to learn and enhance skills that promote diversity, equity and inclusion. Participate in events related to understanding institutional racism and other forms of oppression.
    • Regular and satisfactory attendance.

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • 2 years of experience in food preparation / kitchen management and supervision
    • Experience working with older adults
    • Valid Food Handler’s Permit or willingness to obtain one upon hire
    • Ability to work independently, using good judgment to make decisions
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Current First Aid / CPR / AED training (provided by PNA)
    • Team-orientation and appreciation for community-building mission of the PNA
    • Ability to work in an open office environment
    • Position requires occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds, including room set-up and take down for occasional events, and ability to climb stairs.

    Compensation

    This is a 30 hour per week position, $23 - $26 per hour DOE. We offer a convivial, positive, and flexible working environment.     About the Phinney Neighborhood Association

    Headquartered in a former elementary school, the PNA has developed an active community center that not only serves as a focus of the Phinney/Greenwood neighborhood, but offers programs and activities that reach far beyond the immediate neighborhood, at four different sites in Phinney, Greenwood, and Ballard. Current programs include two preschool cooperatives, a licensed preschool and school age program at Whittier Elementary School, a hot meal program, the Greenwood Senior Center, PNA Village, a tool lending library, a business membership program, family memberships, room rentals, and countless special events that bring friends and neighbors together. We co-sponsor a summer farmers market, weekly folk music concerts, and other community events. The PNA serves over 23,000 people each year, has 70 staff, 1,100 volunteers, and an annual budget of $3.6 million.
