Assistant Engagement Producer

Descripción
The Food & Environment Reporting Network (FERN) is looking for its next Assistant Engagement Producer.
FERN, an award-winning non-profit news organization, has been producing independent, non-profit journalism at the intersection of food, agriculture, and the environment for well over a decade. FERN is prioritizing its connections to readers, viewers, and listeners who want to engage with our content. Innovative use of our social media channels is a key component of that effort. We are currently seeking a highly creative, highly motivated self-starter to fill the Assistant Engagement Producer role. This role includes creating multimedia content for FERN’s social media channels, podcast production for audio and video, helping to create and post content across FERN’s social media/audience platforms, and monitoring daily activity on those platforms, including audience listening and analysis.
This is a hands-on production job. You’ll be shooting, editing, and posting video for Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok; producing and editing our podcasts (Forked and REAP/SOW); writing scripts and copy; and helping coordinate the rollout of FERN’s reporting with our editorial and co-publishing partners. You’ll work closely with FERN’s Audience Lead and have creative ownership over the content you make.
We’re a small team, so this role is varied and you’ll wear many hats. Some weeks that means producing and editing several reels; other weeks it means troubleshooting a podcast file before a deadline; some weeks you may be corresponding with content creators. We’re looking for someone who’s energized by this kind of workplace variation, someone creative, self-directed, and unbothered by a tight turnaround.
What you’ll do:
- Produce video (primarily short-form, although long-form too) for Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok including reels, shorts, and to-camera pieces from concept through final edit
- Edit and help produce FERN’s podcast slate (Forked, REAP/SOW and its subfeeds), including audio editing, video versions for YouTube, and interview production
- Write scripts, captions, and copy in FERN’s voice across formats
- Post and manage content across FERN’s social platforms, including scheduling and day-to-day publishing
- Help build and maintain relationships with co-publishing and creator partners: coordinating rollout logistics, correspondence, and asset requests
- Pitch in wherever the week needs it, this is a small but mighty newsroom and priorities shift fast
Requirements:
- Two or more years of experience producing video and audio content, such as Instagram reels and YouTube shorts.
- Professional social media experience at a newsroom or nonprofit.
- Fluency in multimedia tools, such as Descript, Photoshop, Canva, ProTools, AfterEffects, CapCut and/or Premiere.
- Comfort appearing on-camera and providing voiceover for social video.
- Two or more years of experience producing video and audio content, such as Instagram reels and YouTube shorts.
- Comfort working in a virtual environment. Able to communicate well via messaging, as well as in video calls.
- Strong organization skills. Must be able to manage and organize multiple projects.
- Passion and enthusiasm for food and agriculture issues, and for reaching and engaging new and existing audiences.
Preferred:
- Experience building or improving content workflows, templates, or light automation
- Podcast production experience
- Experience in a remote work environment.
This is a full-time (5 days, 40-hr work week) fully remote position with benefits. You will report to FERN’s Audience Lead. FERN is a virtual organization and the FERN team is predominantly based in the Eastern Time zone. Applications from anywhere in the U.S. will be considered, however we are unable to accept international applications at this time.
Salary: $40,000-$50,000, commensurate with experience.
FERN believes a diverse, open and inclusive environment is essential, and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
