    I AM ALS is a community-led organization with the revolutionary goal of changing ALS from fatal to chronic. We provide support and resources to those impacted by ALS; empower advocates to raise awareness; and lead the movement against ALS in driving the development of cures. Founded in 2019 by husband and wife team Brian Wallach and Sandra Abrevaya, I AM ALS was born out of their desire to rewrite the ALS story for Brian and the tens of thousands of other people with ALS. As we grow, we’re seeking a part-time contract Accountant to support our financial operations and partner with our leadership on continual improvement of our financial systems.

    About the Role

    We’re looking for a detail-oriented, proactive contract accountant to ensure operational excellence across our financial systems. This role is ideal for someone with strong accounting expertise who has comfort working autonomously, managing monthly close and reporting cycles, and interfacing with leadership, staff, and external vendors (e.g. auditors, payroll, retirement plan administrator).

    You’ll lead our day-to-day bookkeeping, ensure fiscal accuracy and compliance, and contribute to monthly close, reporting, payroll, and audit prep. In this role you’ll report to the Chief of Staff and serve as a strategic thought partner and subject matter expert to build and maintain workflows that contribute to continual improvement of our financial management practices and health.

    Core Responsibilities

    • Maintain accurate and timely financial records in QuickBooks Online, including journal entries and reconciliations
    • Process accounts payable, including timely payment of vendor invoices and maintenance of bill pay systems
    • Reconcile bank, credit card, and investment accounts on a monthly basis
    • Collaborate with fundraising staff to on monthly reconciliation of revenue data across accounting and internal CRM records
    • Prepare monthly financial reports, including budget vs. actuals for departments and cash flow projections
    • Manage payroll processing, including onboarding of new employees into our payroll system, and coordinate benefit contributions (401k, health, commuter, FSA)
    • Track and allocate restricted and unrestricted funds in line with grant and donor requirements
    • Support annual budgeting process and recommend forecast adjustments as needed
    • Prepare documentation for audit and 990 filings in collaboration with the Chief of Staff
    • Uphold internal controls and ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards
    • Recommend and implement improvements to financial operations for efficiency, clarity, and scalability

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of nonprofit accounting experience
    • Expert proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Excel, and Google Workspace
    • Strong understanding of GAAP accounting and nonprofit financial management
    • Familiarity with federal/state compliance, payroll systems, and benefits administration
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently and communicate clearly with non-finance staff
    • Comfort with a fast-paced, fully remote startup-style environment

    Contract Details

    • This position will be hired as an Independent Contractor (1099) with an initial 12-month term, with annual renewal expected upon mutual agreement.
    • Expected hourly rate is $35-$65, dependent on experience and services provided. Adjustment to a monthly retainer is negotiable after an initial period.
    • The role is anticipated at 40-50 hours per month (weekday work hours preferred), with the exact schedule to be decided with the Chief of Staff. Flexibility is required during busy seasons.
